Will we see an increase in women & girls getting inspired to take up a new sport?
17th September 2021
There’s no doubt that sportswomen like Emma Raducanu, Charlotte Worthington and Beth Shriever are inspirational figures when it comes to sporting achievements.  This year Beth became the first British BMX racing cyclist in history to win both the Olympic and World titles in the same year;  Charlotte won gold at the Cycling BMX Freestyle park final in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and of course Emma achieved her historical US Open win last weekend by becoming the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam Singles Title.

It’s true that all experts once started out as beginners and none of these sportswomen would argue with the level of commitment, tenacity and sheer effort that reaching this level of competition demands.  With men more traditionally being the driving force behind UK sport, can female athletes really inspire British women to adopt a new sport into their lives, or indeed rekindle a previous love for sport that life has forced them to quash?

“This Girl Can”, a Government backed campaign was born in 2015 by Sport England, designed to get more girls and women participating in sport.  It challenges the conventional perceptions of what exercise “looks like”, aiming to break down the barriers that exist to stop them getting involved, such as lack of confidence, fear of judgement or external influences. Although the gender gap between men and women participating in sports has significantly decreased (by over 90,000 alone in 2018), more men than women in general are living a more physical lifestyle.

One of the ways in which Snowsports can reinvigorate a passion for sport is the fact that it can be very social, enabling friends and family to enjoy it all together.  Skiing and snowboarding are still quite niche sports within the UK with only 3.3m skiers (in 2019) vs an overall population of 68m+.  This means that when you start meeting like minded skiers and snowboarders you also join a tight knit community with several online forums, clubs and memberships all designed to bring you closer together.

For many, Snowsports are on that elusive “bucket list” – something you’ve always wanted to do but never quite got round to doing it.  At Snozone our Coaches are highly experienced at teaching all levels of ability, confidence and ages, and even if you never see yourself reaching the Olympics, learning a new sport with your children, spouse or friends, or even on your own, is always a great achievement and one to be proud of.
